  1.    Nearly perfectly spherical, with a 
  2. diameter of around one inch, the adult 
  3. human eye is surrounded by a layer of 
  4. tough, elastic connective tissue called the 
  5. sclera.  The portion of the sclera over the 
  6. front of the eye, called the cornea, is 
  7. transparent and is the first light-focusing 
  8. element of the eye.  The next layer beneath 
  9. the sclera is the choroid which serves 
  10. several important functions.  Containing 
  11. many blood vessels, the choroid supplies 
  12. blood to the rest of the eye.  Darkly 
  13. pigmented, the choroid absorbs 
  14. internally reflected light and prevents it 
  15. from entering the eye.  At the junction 
  16. between the cornea and the sclera, the 
  17. choroid is thickened and embedded with
